Emma Kelly

1998 Georgia Music Hall of Fame Inductee

Known as the Lady of 6,000 Songs, singer/pianist Emma Kelly received recognition from the book Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. The 1994 book by author John Berendt assigned an entire chapter to Kelly, painting her as a strict Baptist who played cocktail lounges on Saturday nights but was able to teach religion classes the following Sunday morning. The book was eventually made into a movie, directed by Clint Eastwood, three years after the book was originally published. Due to her publicity from the book and movie, Kelly's nightclub act became a popular tourist attraction during the later years of her life. Kelly received her nickname from fellow songwriter Johnny Mercer after she could play various songs that Mercer requested she play, estimating that Kelly knew roughly a staggering 6,000 songs strictly from memory. Kelly passed away at the age of 82 in 2001. ~ Greg Prato, All Music Guide
