Joel Katz

1995 Georgia Music Hall of Fame Inductee

 Joel Katz is an internationally recognized leader in the field of entertainment law. As chair of the Global Entertainment Practice of Greenberg Traurig, he represents some of the world’s best-known entertainers, music producers, record companies, concert promoters and Fortune 500 companies. His client rosters includes Christina Aguilera, Alan Jackson, Kenny Chesney, Jimmy Buffett, Collective Soul, Sheryl Crow, Sony Corporation of American, Clear Channel Entertainment, Universal-Vivendi, Anschutz Entertainment, The Coca Cola Company and many more.

Katz founded Katz, Smith & Cohen, 30 years ago and it became one of the country's largest music entertainment law firms. In 1998, he merged his practice with Greenberg Traurig, a firm with over 1,700 lawyers with 29 locations across the globe. Katz serves as General Counsel for the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS) and Special Counsel for the Country Music Association and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, is former Chairman of the American Bar Association’s Entertainment and Sports Law section and over the years, and currently serves or has served on the boards of the Gibson Foundation, the Baldwin Piano Corporation, TicketReserve, Inc., WhiteFence, T. J. Martell Foundation for Leukemia Research, the Music Educators National Conference, Farm Aid, Inc. Georgia Music Hall of Fame Authority, the Georgia Film, Video and Music Advisory Commission, the Atlanta Songwriters Association, the Atlanta Chamber of Commerce and many more.

A sought after panelist and writer, Katz has been recognized with numerous awards, including induction into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame in 1995. In 2007, he was noted in Legal 500 US, an internationally recognized client referral, and selected as a Georgia Super Lawyer. He was the recipient of the 2006 American Bar Association Entertainment and Sports Law Award for distinguished service and scholarship. In 2005, he was named a Leading Lawyer in America by “Lawdragon Magazine.” In 2003, he received the “Spirit of Music Award” from the UGA Federation of New York and The Music for Youth Foundation and was named to the Hunter College Hall of Fame (where he received a B.A. in Economics).

In 2002, he was named among the “100 Most Influential Georgians” by Georgia Trend magazine and the same year, received the Heroes Award from the Atlanta chapter of the Recording Academy. In 1999, the University of Tennessee Law Library was dedicated at the “Joel A. Katz Law Library,” 30 years after he received his J.D. from the school’s College of Law.
