Louisiana Truckstop Barbara Cue |
Released January 11, 2000
With their casually rootsy rock style, Barbara Cue could be classified as a Dixie counterpart to a British pub rock band or its Yankee equivalent, NRBQ. The NRBQ comparison is particularly appropriate since the Barbara Cue guys first got together to have some fun playing their favorite NRBQ tunes. While the group evolved into playing original material, this initial influence lingers both in the band's name (say "barbara cue" and "nrbq," and you can hear the similarities) and in their solo cover tune: NRBQ's "Little Floater." Barbara Cue serves as a side project for a number of Atlanta-area musicians. Drummer Todd Nance's main gig is with Widespread Panic. Guitarist William Tonks was part of the alt-country band Six String Drag, and pedal steel man John Neff has performed with honky tonkers the Star Room Boys and southern rocker Drive-By Truckers. Paul "Crumpy" Edwards and Jon Mills, who both play bass and guitar, fill out the band, while co-producer David Barbe (ex-Sugar) and Panic's keyboardist John Hermann contribute to the disc as well. Not surprisingly, Louisiana Truck Stop comes well stocked with a rich variety of American roots music that taps into the bandmembers' backgrounds and talents. "For One Thing" and "Back To Town" nicely mine a mellow country rock vein, while "Pictures of You" and "Dig Deeper" boast a bluesier Southern rock sound. On songs like "Find a Fool" and "True Identity," the band suggests Los Lobos had the band hailed from Georgia and not East L.A.. While "Little Floater" might be the most memorable tune here, the band blends country rock and bar rock with some Southern jams to create an appealing, good-timin' sound that strikes a nice balance between informality and craftsmanship. ~ Michael Berick, All Music Guide
