Dizzy: The Best of Tommy Roe Tommy Roe |
Released May 26, 1998
Dizzy: The Best of Tommy Roe is a solid 18-song collection that contains all of the bubblegum icon's best songs and biggest hits. The tracks are all original recordings and offer definitive proof of Roe's genius as a writer and performer of some of the hookiest, snappiest bubblegum/pop ever recorded. During his prime (which lasted a very long time for a performer of his ilk, 1962 to 1969) he dropped classics like the funky "Dizzy," the back from the grave Buddy Holly tribute "Sheila," the swampy "Jam Up and Jelly Tight" (which would have been a perfect song for Elvis to handle), and the insanely atmospheric "It's Now Winter's Day." Music Club gathers all the hits and does a pretty good job of rounding up his best non-hit songs like the fiercely catchy "Cinnamon" and "Kiss and Run." On the negative side they include his pedestrian cover of CCR's "Proud Mary," and because it cuts off before the '70s, a couple of his last great songs like "Stir It Up and Serve It" and "We Can Make Music" aren't here. Really though, it does the job of getting Roe's music out there for '60s pop fanatics and anyone who likes rock & roll light frothy and full of fun. It isn't perfect, but until that collection comes along, it'll do just fine ~ Tim Sendra, All Music Guide
