Soul Circuit Retrospectives Millie Jackson |
Released October 24, 2006
Sassy, bold and delightfully straight-ahead, Millie Jackson is a loose mixture of old-school soul (if decidedly on the blue side) and proto-rap (she doesn't really rap per se so much as drop from the melody and speak her mind over the rhythm), and her vision for her music is decidedly post-modern, even if it straddles a few lines here and there. This two-disc set isn't really a fair retrospective, since it doesn't include a single one of her best-known songs like "Ask Me What You Want," "My Man, a Sweet Man," "Hurts So Good," "If You're Not in Love by Monday," or the much-lauded "If Loving You Is Wrong I Don't Want to Be Right." Since all of these are available on greatest-hits packages, it makes more sense to go that route before coming back to this set. ~ Steve Leggett, All Music Guide
