Live and Outrageous (Rated XXX) Millie Jackson |
Released 1982 Millie Jackson's sequel to Live and Uncensored, the aptly titled Live and Outrageous, falls short of its predecessor's high standard as below par songs and monologues predominate. On "I Had to Say It," Jackson's usual sharp wit goes soft as she embarrassingly ridicules old school rap for an ill perceived debt it owes to her own "rappin" style--turning ugly with a mumbling Kurtis Blow impersonation. She falters musically too by replacing the assured, stax soul groove of Uncensored and her earlier Caught Up with thin disco arrangements and bloated covers; blasé versions of Rod Stewart's "Passion" and Kenny Loggins "This Is It" fittingly bookend the album. There are a few bright spots here, though; the keenly paced, barroom betrayal narrative "Lovers and Girlfriends" and the Gladys Knight inspired "Still." Regardless, one should stick with Live and Uncensored to hear Jackson at her best and leave Live and Outrageous for the die-hard fan. ~ Stephen Cook, All Music Guide
