Starting All Over Again Clarence Carter |
Released July 31, 2001
This is Clarence Carter displaying his singing skills on material made famous by others, with "Too Weak to Fight" and "Slip Away" being the sole exceptions. It's not hard-hitting or raunchy like Carter's usual sets (many will say it's watered-down), but it's always interesting listening to a great recording artist doing good songs. The most compelling updates include Carter's remakes of "Backstabbers" and "Everybody Plays the Fool" (both with nice backing vocals); "Easy" (incorrectly listed as "I'm Easy" with erroneous songwriters [this is the Commodores' cut]); Dobie Gray's "Drift Away"; and Carter's hit rendition of Chairmen of the Board's "Patches." Carter mimics the original singers so well on some of these cuts that sometimes you don't think it's him. ~ Andrew Hamilton, All Music Guide
