As hinted at by the band photo on its cover, Lynyrd Skynyrd's Yesterday and Today is comprised solely of latter day/post-Ronnie Van Zant recordings. The majority of this budget-priced, ten-track collection features live renditions of Skynyrd classics, but with Ronnie Van Zant's younger brother, Johnny Van Zant, on vocals. And he certainly does a fine job of paying tribute to his fallen older brother, as evidenced by renditions of "Gimme Three Steps," "Saturday Night Special," and "That Smell," among others. And there's also a smattering of newer Skynyrd tracks, which show the group still walking the line between tough ("Preacher Man") and tranquil ("Home Is Where the Heart Is"). While the majority of music fans looking for a Skynyrd compilation will want one that focuses on the superior '70s era, fans wanting proof that modern-day Skynyrd can still cut it on the concert stage are recommended to give Yesterday and Today a listen. ~ Greg Prato, All Music Guide
