By Your Side [UK CD5] The Black Crowes |
Released 1998 This four track U.K. single/CD-5 of "By your Side" features the aforementioned album title track, plus a triplet of anomalies including "Grows a Rose," "Peace Anyway," and an acoustic version of the collector fave, "Horsehead." If the By Your Side project proved to be a welcome return to form, these leftovers may well indicate that the band probably had a few chestnuts left up their collective sleeves. "Grows a Rose" is a straight-ahead rocker with an "isn't-that-familiar?" type of Black Crowes chorus -- one of the band's many charms. Lyrically, the track speaks of redemption and new beginnings -- something the band had to engage in to survive its hippie fog period of the mid-'90s. Even better is "Peace Anyway." Originally conceived for the Crowes' unreleased Band Sessions effort, the cut is ushered in by a lovely Eddie Harsch/Rich Robinson melody which discreetly borrows its inspiration from Humble Pie's "30 Days in a Hole." The track is actually a bit of a throwback to Amorica B-side territory, but possesses a renewed sense of purpose and optimism. Who knows how it would have fit on By Your Side, because sonically, "Peace Anyway" sounds a little too close to comfort to "Virtue and Vice." The CD-5 winds down with a smoky dobro version of "Horsehead" (the aforementioned fan favorite is another leftover from the Band Sessions), which may have had a real Led Zeppelin feel in its original album incarnation, but in this deconstructed acoustic version proves itself once and for all as one of the better compositions from the band's latter day period. ~ John Franck, All Music Guide
