Spanish Guitar [Import CD #1] Toni Braxton |
Released October 31, 2000
Spanish Guitar was the third release from Toni Braxton's smoldering album The Heat, but was never issued as a commercial single in the U.S., causing it to flounder in the lower reaches of the Hot 100. Its dance remix, however, managed to peak at number one on the dance charts. "Spanish Guitar," in its original form, is a melodramatic, sweeping ballad, similar to another Diane Warren-penned Braxton hit, "Unbreak My Heart." The Australian import version of the single boasts four similar single-length dance mixes. The best is the "HQ2 Mix," which, with its dramatic stops and starts, results in a rich and very Spanish-sounding dance song ("Spanish Guitar," like "Unbreak My Heart," lends itself beautifully to dancefloor transformation, unlike other ballads given similar treatment). The other mixes, such as the "Royal Garden's Flamenco Mix," are a little smoother, but each contains an unstoppable, driving beat. This song, had it been marketed correctly, could have easily become a huge hit in the United States. Instead, it ranks as one of Toni Braxton's lowest-charting singles. ~ Jose F.
