After a few years of shoddy production by Southern hip-hop producers on relatively underground (or at least at one time underground) labels -- No Limit, Suave House, Street Smart, Cash Money, Rap-a-Lot -- that looked toward budget drum machines and synths to program machine gun-like bounce beats in the mid- to late '90s, the formula finally came together by the end of the decade. The synth-heavy yet ultimately sparse beats on Ludacris' "What's Your Fantasy" stand as a prime example of how years of ill-fated amateur production finally resulted in a potent production style. Of course, the fact that Ludacris obviously possesses talent as not only an MC but also as a hook-minded songwriter helped this song garner anthem status: "I wanna lick, lick, lick, lick you from your head to your toes/I wanna move from the bed down to the, down to the to the floor...." And the fact that he has sexy-sounding female rapper Shawna get sleazy alongside him helps even more. Still, no matter how infectious this lyrical appeal to young, thriving hormones may be, without the equally stunning beats this song would never have found its way out of the underground.
