Smell the Flowers/Jerry Reed Jerry Reed |
Released July 25, 2000
Smell the Flowers/Jerry Reed pairs two early-'70s albums on one CD. Following a string of novelty singles, "Smell the Flowers" was a completely straight and characteristically upbeat Jerry Reed original that made the country Top 25 in 1972. Reed wrote nearly half the songs on the album of the same name, which is a mostly serious affair that spotlights Reed's pop side. Like Roy Clark, Reed is a phenomenal country guitar picker with a pop streak, and "If I Ever (Love Again)" mines the same easy listening territory that gave Clark crossover success with "Yesterday (When I Was Young)." "My Guitar and My Song" has a "Gentle on My Mind" vibe, while "It Ain't Home, but It Ain't Bad" and "Take It Easy (On Your Mind)" provide a little of the funky attitude that sells Reed's novelty songs. The self-titled album has Reed's re-recording of "Alabama Wild Man," which nearly reached the Top 20 four years after the original made a minor dent in the charts. This album offers a more typical program with plenty of up-tempo songs, from the wah-wah guitar workout of "Almost Crazy" to a drastic reworking of "Misery Loves Company," a Reed original that was a number one hit for Porter Wagoner in 1962. Jerry Reed is quite varied and, though it lacks a guitar instrumental, offers a little of everything he does. ~ Greg Adams, All Music Guide
