Georgia Sunshine/Oh, What a Woman! Jerry Reed |
Released May 09, 2000
"Amos Moses" was a turning point in Jerry Reed's career -- it was his first gold record and a major crossover hit that set the tone for his subsequent hits. From then on, certain stylistic trademarks -- novelty material, country-funk rhythms, his cackling laugh, and frequent exclamations of "son!" -- became so strongly associated with Reed's name that they often eclipsed his reputation as a guitarist and his talent as a writer and singer of ballads. Georgia Sunshine shows the many faces of Jerry Reed, from "Amos Moses" and the similarly styled "The Preacher and the Bear" to the easy-swinging hit "Georgia Sunshine" and pop ballad "Dream Sweet Dreams About Me." Reed's guitar-based renditions of "Mule Skinner Blues" and "Eight More Miles to Louisville" are highlights that hearken back to the sound of his Jerry Reed Explores Guitar Country album. Oh, What a Woman! is a brief budget compilation that reprises the hit title track and "Roving Gambler" from the album Better Things in Life, along with the 1967 hit "Guitar Man" and album tracks from the late '60s. Georgia Sunshine is a fine effort, but it's too bad it wasn't paired with another original album for this reissue. ~ Greg Adams, All Music Guide
