An 11 track album that's been sitting in the Ace (Jackson, MS version) vaults since the 1970s, this is classic Piano Red all the way. His good-time singing, rough and garbled though it may be, and his barrelhouse piano playing are both in fine form on this hitherto undocumented session. With a small rhythm section, the focus stays firmly on Red as he turns in re-cuts of "Dr. Feelgood," "The Right String, but the Wrong Yo Yo," Joe Turner's "Shake, Rattle and Roll," "Corrina, Corrina," and a nice sampling of what must have been some set list favorites. The deepest blues on here is "Whiskey Man" aka "Ten Cent Shot," a splendid talking blues with nice, understated slide guitar from the unknown guitarist on this date. But in the main it's Red in high rockin' gear, a man who was truly ahead of his time. While not rivaling his early RCA sides, this session comes as a really nice surprise. ~ Cub Koda, All Music Guide
