V-Disc Recordings: For Our Armed Forces Overseas Johnny Mercer |
Released January 19, 1999
Johnny Mercer recorded only ten songs for the V-Disc program during the World War II era, but they included a few of his most successful compositions and hits, notably "My Sugar Is So Refined," "Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate the Positive," "On the Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe," and "Strip Polka." (Wonder why he didn't do his "G.I. Jive"?) Heard today, they provide interesting alternate versions to his familiar recordings, as usual featuring a studio band conducted by Paul Weston and the Pied Pipers on backup vocals. In fact, some of them sound strikingly similar to the original recordings. ~ William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide
