Released 1998
This lesser-known but excellent Joe Williams reissue features the classic singer on a pair of sessions recorded 18 years apart. The earlier date was cut live with Williams joined by pianist Mike Melvoin, bassist Jim Hughart and drummer Bill Goodwin. The latter session, made in the studio, once again has Melvoin and Hughart but this time with drummer Nick Ceroli and tenor-saxophonist Pete Christlieb. Despite the passing of so many years, Joe Williams sounds pretty identical on both dates. His style had not changed, his voice really had not aged yet and he sounds quite happy to be performing with the rhythm section. Highlights include "I'll Follow You," "I Wanna Go Where You Go," "Close Enough For Love" and Eubie Blake's "I'd Give A Dollar For A Dime." Well worth searching for by fans of Joe Williams, many of whom probably do not know of this album's existence! ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
