Wayne Cochran!
Wayne Cochran

Released 1968

This is the debut album from Mr. Blue-Eyed Soul, Wayne Cochran. Cochran was a sight, a large white man with James Brown moves, sporting a big pompadour. He traveled all year crossing the country on his bus with a big band that included a young Jaco Pastorious on bass. He took time off to record for Chess this album consisting of rehashes of R&B recordings. Cochran, a bona fide soul man, jams on Bobby McClure's "Peak of Love," the Temptations' "Get Ready," Sam & Dave's "You Don't Know Like I Know," and the smoldering "You Can't Judge a Book By the Cover." Mildly successful, it cracked the pop albums chart in 1968 but hit a wall at number 167. ~ Andrew Hamilton, All Music Guide
