More of the Best Johnny Mercer |
Released October 21, 1997
This budget release, the second of two volumes, again draws primarily upon airchecks (as on its predecessor, Some of the Best, there is one Capitol licensing, in this case, "One for My Baby [And One More for the Road]"). One of those radio transcriptions, "Goody, Goody," dates from as far back as 1939, but most are from the '40s when Johnny Mercer's radio show, Music Shop, regularly featured Paul Weston & His Orchestra as well as Weston's wife, Jo Stafford, who duets on two songs here. Bing Crosby also drops in for a "Small Fry" full of special lyrics (apparently drawn from his own show, since it features his backup orchestra, conducted by John Scott Trotter). While it is another collection of odds and ends, this disc ranks slightly higher than its predecessor, featuring more of Mercer's great original compositions, including "I'm an Old Cowhand," "Accentuate the Positive" and "One for My Baby (And One More for the Road)." ~ William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide
