Some of the Best Johnny Mercer |
Released October 21, 1997
This budget release, the first of two volumes, ranges from the '40s to the '70s, containing airchecks from Johnny Mercer's Music Shop radio show, one track, 1949's duet with Margaret Whiting on "I Never Heard You Say," licensed from Capitol Records, and miscellaneous later sessions. Bing Crosby duets on "Mr. Meadowlark," and such familiar faces as the Pied Pipers and Paul Weston also make appearances. Mercer is an engaging singer even when he is singing lyrics other than his own, which he does a lot of here (the only major Mercer composition present is "On the Atchison, Topeka & the Santa Fe"), but this disc is a hodge-podge. ~ William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide
