Released 1974 Truth be told, there's very little genuine about Real--Clarence Carter's first session for new label ABC is a naked bid to recapture the singer's Atlantic-era commercial success, abandoning his signature deep-soul sensibilities in favor of a slick, overproduced sound closely aligned with the prevailing chart wisdom. The problem is that there's nothing commercial or glossy about Carter's junkyard-dog growl--McKinley Jackson and Paul Riser's overbaked arrangements effectively neuter his virility and vitality. Of course, you can take Carter out of the south but you can't take the south out of Carter, and he almost salvages cuts like "On Your Way Down" and "Fine Love" on sheer passion alone. ~ Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide
