Almost immediately awarded the honoraria of one-hit wonder for her smash "I Love the Nightlife (Disco Round)," Alicia Bridges pretty much reached the high point of her career in one glorious moment. That title has endured a complete change in sonic landscape, remaining a staple of retro hits packages, while Bridges herself can still be counted one of the queens of disco. And it's certainly that one track which drives her eponymous 1978 debut. The combination of light rhythm, light strings, disco attitude, and Bridges' own throaty cry of "action" sent the single to the top of the charts, and the front of the play list at clubs across the nation. But the catch is that that's the LP's one trick -- the rest of Alicia Bridges flows downhill in a deluge of one-dimensionality that's hard to ignore. She repeats her initial testiness across both the minor chart hit "Body Heat," while adding a proto-Heart-ian rock ethic to "Diamond in the Rough." Elsewhere, the slower-tempoed "In the Name of Love" utilizes some very patchy backing vocals, while "High Altitudes" is nearly a cappella until the guitar kicks in. Both put Bridges firmly on the strata of the lesser nightclub circuit, and neither hides the fact that she hasn't got a lot of vocal range. Despite the utter glory of the hit, there's not enough to keep even the most rabid listener occupied across two sides.
