Indispensable Fletcher Henderson |
Released March ??, 1927 - August 04, 1936 This double-CD from RCA's Jazz Tribune series (a straight reissue of an earlier two-LP set) has highlights from bandleader Fletcher Henderson's Victor recordings. Dating from 1927, 1931-32, 1934 and 1936, several editions of Henderson's orchestra are represented with such soloists as trumpeters Tommy Ladnier, Bobby Stark, Rex Stewart, Red Allen and Roy Eldridge, trombonists Jimmy Harrison, Benny Morton, Sandy Williams and J.C. Higginbotham, clarinetist Buster Bailey, altoist Edgar Sampson, and tenors Coleman Hawkins, Ben Webster and Chu Berry being among the key soloists; Henderson always used the best. Although not as complete as some series, there are many highpoints on this two-fer including two takes apiece of "St. Louis Shuffle" and "Variety Stomp," "Sugar Foot Stomp," "Roll On, Mississippi, Roll On," "Singing the Blues," "Poor Old Joe," "Hocus Pocus," "Jangled Nerves," "Riffin"' and "You Can Depend on Me." An excellent set filled with classics. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
