Released 1989 As the follow-up to "Roam," "Deadbeat Club" fell far short of living up to its predecessors' high (namely, Top Five) expectations, but it is a very entertaining single that finds the B-52's in a rare, reflective mood that's quite engaging. Since it wasn't a particularly danceable single, it wasn't released in a variety of singles, all backed with remixes. In the U.S., there was a promotional single that featured a remixed edit, along with the original album version and a single edit, but the main single (only released on seven-inch vinyl and cassette single), featured the original version backed by a live version of "Planet Claire." In the U.K., it was released as a 12-inch single and a CD-5 single, supported by "Love Shack" and the atrocious "Megamix," which slammed all the Cosmic Thing singles ("Roam," "Love Shack," "Channel Z," "Deadbeat Club") into one track pinned down by a Jive Bunny & the Mastermixers beat. It was a tacky ending to an otherwise fine single. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide
