Rarest Fletcher, Vol. 1 (1923-1924) Fletcher Henderson |
Released June 28, 1923 - March 11, 1924 One of the best collections of the Fletcher Henderson orchestra prior to Louis Armstrong joining up, this Jazz Heritage LP finds the band gradually expanding from eight to ten pieces and beginning to come to grips with the emergence in New York of New Orleans jazz brought in by imported players. Evolving from a first-class but dated dance band into a jazz ensemble, Henderson's orchestra was already much more jazz-oriented than the big band led by the "King of Jazz" (Paul Whiteman), but at this point it lacked any great soloists; even 18-year-old Coleman Hawkins, the up-and-coming master of the tenor sax, had a long way to go. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
