Swing's the Thing (1931-1934) Fletcher Henderson |
Released ??, 1931 - September 25, 1934 Swing might have been the thing by the mid-'30s, but the Fletcher Henderson Orchestra, which had practically invented swing a decade earlier, was no longer leading the way. This Jazz Heritage LP includes two titles from 1931 (including the memorable "Radio Rhythm") and the final 12 songs recorded by the band before its breakup in 1935. Still a top-notch band (with Ben Webster in the place of the departed Coleman Hawkins and such fine players as trumpeter Red Allen, clarinetist Buster Bailey, and, on "Liza," altoist Benny Carter), bad decisions and a lack of direction ultimately put it out of business just when swing was really catching on. Such performances on this fine LP as "Big John's Special" and "Down South Camp Meetin'" (both later popularized by Benny Goodman) show what might have been. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
